Hello families,
Please remember to read this blog with your child. This will help them review some of the things we learned in class. :)
We have been focussing on kindness in our classroom. These are the two questions we have discussed this week.
1. How do you feel when someone is unkind?
2. How do you show kindness?
We read the book "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. In this book, the students in her class are making fun of her name. We talked about how she felt and what we could have said instead. We went around sharing what it means to be kind. Here are some of the things the students came up with:
"Being kind means being nice."
"We need to share."
"I can say "I like your dress."
"I like your hair."
"Saying please and thank you."
"Smiling"
The students cut and decorated little red hearts. We used these hearts for an activity. Each time Chrysanthemum was teased because of her name, we crumpled up the heart. Every time someone did something nice to her, we tried our best to smooth it out. By the end of the story, the heart was wrinkled and ripped. We learned that words do hurt and sometimes we need to think before we speak.
In our visual journals, we glued the hearts in and did some scribble writing. We wrote about what it means to be kind. The students then shared their writing with each other. We will continue to talk about kindness this upcoming week.
Pumpkin Inquiry
In science, we began to explore the life cycle of a pumpkin. We learned a song that will help us remember the cycle.
Reminders
Picture Day is on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. It is formal uniforms for students.
